Product Review

I recently tried Silk's almond milk for the first time. How does it perform in terms of in taste, nutrition, and other factors?

I think almond milk has a wonderful flavor. I used to drink soymilk all the time until I discovered how delicious and nutritious almond milk was. My usual brand is Almond Breeze,  which is wonderful, but I recently received a coupon for a free half gallon of Silk's Pure Almond and decided to give it a try; after all, it was free and something new. I honestly didn't even know Silk made an almond milk, so I was eager to taste it.

I was able to spot this product in many common grocery stores such as Food Lion and Martin's/Giant and even mass retailers such as Wal-Mart.

Nutritional Overview

For a standard one cup (240 mL) serving, Silk Pure Almond almond milk has 60 calories, 25 from fat, and no cholesterol, unlike even fat free dairy milk. Silk Pure Almond contains 6% sodium, 4% potassium, 1 gram of protein, and also 1 gram of fiber and 7 grams of sugar per serving. It also provides a substantial amount of B vitamins along with vitamins A, E and D as well as calcium and other nutrients.

In fact, this almond milk provides as much calcium and vitamin D as dairy milk but without any cholesterol, saturated fat, or lactose, and with less sugar per serving. Almonds are high in antioxidants, fiber, and protein, so this carries over into the milk as well, providing a tasty and nutritious beverage.

The Flavor

In my opinion, the almond milk tastes great, but I do prefer Almond Breeze's very smooth and creamy flavor with a subtle sweetness and hint of almond flavor over Silk's Pure Almond, which also tastes very smooth but has a slightly more distinct almond taste and even seems a bit saltier, in my opinion. Both are delicious, but I prefer the Almond Breeze over the Silk Pure Almond.

Silk's almond milk does not taste like dairy milk or soymilk and is more substantial and flavorful than rice milk. I highly recommend this product if you are concerned with drinking dairy milk for any reason or want a healthier option, but, as I stated earlier, my preference is for the Almond Breeze.

Different varieties of Silk's almond and soymilks are available, including plain, vanilla, chocolate, and light.Silk also manufactures dairy free yogurt and coffee creamers.

Ingredients

Silk Pure Almond contains filtered water, almonds, cane juice, and other ingredients as well. Silk Pure Almond contains no soy and uses sunflower lecithin in place of the soy lecithin. This product is vegan.

While this milk is a healthy alternative to dairy milk and soymilk, fortified with vitamins and minerals and rich in antioxidants, it is obviously not qualified to be used as infant formula but is safe for children and adults of all ages.

The Container

Silk Pure Almond is a primarily white container with the logo for Silk near the top and the words Pure Almond in a brown almond-colored lettering and the words "all natural almondmilk" written below. A glass of milk is being poured with a background of dozens of whole almonds for the lower half of Silk's label.

The almond milk comes in the standard waxy cardboard containers in which most half gallons of milk are housed, which, I believe, are easily recyclable or reusable and displays nutritional information on the very next panel (if you turn the container clockwise). There is a white plastic screw-off cap for easy pouring. Silk Pure Almond suggests shaking before using and it must remain refrigerated.

Note: almondmilk is one word at the Silk website and on the product package.

We just recently started buying this product. The reason is our 7 yr old grandaughter is not able to drink milk anymore . We are going to cook with it as well as drink it. The taste is amazing!
