Kenmore and Samsung offer some of the most popular refrigerators in the market. That includes four-door models and the ever popular stainless steel.
The refrigerator is undoubtedly one of the most important appliances in your house. For that reason, it’s no wonder that appliance makers have devoted a considerable amount of research and development in outfitting the “ice box” with features families of the 1950s would have never dreamed about.
Two of the leaders in this industry are Kenmore and Samsung. Their models all do the same thing, i.e. keep foods cold or frozen. However, depending on your budget, needs and wants, these top brands offer something for everyone.
All About Fridges
Both Kenmore and Samsung have models that can suit just about any taste. The colors include black, white and stainless steel. You can choose from models featuring top-freezers or bottom freezers. Side-by-side models are the most popular, with those featuring French doors leading the pact as of the mid-2000s. Built-in models are becoming more popular as shoppers are focusing on having their kitchens be custom built.
Usable capacity sizes range from about 13 cu. ft. to 29 cu. ft. for each maker. So whether you need a fridge for one or a family of more than six, you are likely to find an appropriate size.
A popular feature that both brands carry are filtered water dispensers. Given the costs of running these large appliances, shoppers will find that both brands have models that are energy efficient. You can identify them the Energy Star logo.
Reviews and Rankings
Kenmore and Samsung models received high rankings in the Consumer Reports 2010 buying guide.
Specifically, one of Kenmore’s bottom-freezers received the buying guide’s highest scores – 82. That model, the Elite 7759, also received the guide’s “recommended” rating, which means that it is considered to be a high-performing model that stands out.
Samsung’s RF266AB[WP] fell in behind the above-mentioned Kenmore model with a score of 74. In addition to receiving the buying guide’s “recommended” rating, it also received the buying guide’s “best buy” rating for its combination of performance and price.
A weak spot for both brands is in the category of energy efficiency. Kenmore’s Elite 7872 model and Samsung’s RB197AB[WP] were found to be “fair” by Consumer Reports.
Samsung touts its refrigerators as being “huge on style.” It points to being the recipient of J.D. Power & Associates score for refrigerators in 2005, 2006, and 2007.
Those bragging rights don’t come without a price. Samsung’s refrigerators are typically more expensive than those of Kenmore. For example, one of its more popular models is the four-door RF4287HARS, which has 28 cu. ft. of space. It retails for $2,999, which is one of its most expensive models.
Kenmore refrigerator models carry the distinction of being a classic household brand name. It became the brand name for Sears in 1977.
It has also unveiled a four-door model that has 27.5 cu. ft. of usable space. It retails for roughly $2,805.
Where to Buy
While Samsung’s refrigerators are sold in several stores, including Lowes, Home Depot and Best Buy, Kenmore’s are not. Kenmore is sold in Sears stores primarily, although some Kmart stores carry a few of the lines. Sears’ exclusivity is due to Kenmore being one of its brands.
