The E-Cigarette: A True Smoker's Test

Is the e cigarette really a good substitution? A real smoker puts the electronic cigarette to the test.

The Electronic Cigarette (also called the E-Cigarette) is crap. Just crap. Here, let me explain.

Up until a few months ago I was a smoker. A pack a day smoker. I knew I needed to quit, not just for health reasons but because the health insurance I get from my employer was about to charge an extra $50 a month for those of us who continue to light up.

So I tried the E-Cigarette. I didn’t go out and buy it (as far as I know you can only buy it online). I had a reporter friend who obtained it for a story she was doing about this new electronic cigarette. Being a person with just months to finally kick the habit before being forced to shell out hundreds of dollars more each year for my filthy habit, I was happy to accept this unusual gift.

The first night I got it I tried it. It was pretty easy to use. Although it was not so obvious to know whether or not this thing was actually working. It’s supposed to put out a puff of smoke (actually it’s vapors), which is supposed to give smokers some of that cigarette satisfaction we’re used to. Unfortunately, only about once out of every dozen or so puffs I took would I actually produce smoke. Those puffs without basically just felt like I was trying to suck in through a straw with too many wholes in it. Essentially, I was not satisfying at all.

And I haven’t even gotten to the flavor, or perhaps I should say the taste. When you puff in (especially during those rare puffs that actually produce vapors) you’ll notice a sweet flavor in your mouth. The closest comparison I can make is that the flavor of the E-Cigarette is like when you accidentally inhale a little bit of sugar. Now sugar is definitely not the worst thing to inhale… but c’mon! Sugar? What about the addicting act of smoking cigarettes has anything to do with sugar? I don’t smoke because I have a sweet tooth! So I really couldn’t understand what the purpose was for this distinct flavor. I have smoked menthols (when forced to bumming cigarettes off friends), and even inhaling that minty flavor is a far distant experience than that of the E-Cigarette’s sugary taste.

Most of the E-Cigarette ads I’ve seen online do not necessarily market their “smokes” as a replacement to the normal cigarettes. But it is sold as a “healthier alternative” claiming to have thousands of less chemicals. But don’t be fooled. E-Cigarettes are not a “safe” alternative, just a safer one.

E-Cigarette reviews also try to sell you on its smoke-free benefits. The “smoke” I described above isn’t actually smoke, but rather a vapor. This means you’ll be able to smoke these electronic cigarettes in places that now ban smoking, which these days is just about everywhere. However I suspect once a few puffs of that vapor escapes you’ll still find people complaining.

Bottom Line: the E-Cigarettes don’t work. At least they didn’t for me. I like smoking. I love smoking. And I really, truly wanted some alternative stick that would be my smoking substitute. Despite my initial frustration with them, I tried the electronic smokes over and over again, determined to like them. Unfortunately, any hopes I had to replace my habit with the E-Cigarette went up in smoke.

Hello guys,

I am also not a smoker but when people smoke near me it’s become very difficult for to breath. I heard lot of about tobacco cigarettes that they are very harmful not only for those who smoke it but also for those who sit with smokers. I m really shocked when i hear that the tobacco smoke can cause cancer i m really worried for them especially for my friends who smoke. So, i think, i must have to help them as much as i can. It’s very difficult for them to stop smoke once at all or may it’s not possible some of them. Then one i heard about these electronic cigarettes. When i heard that e-cigarette have only a few chemicals and most important thing its environment friendly do not create any smoke. I said thanks God, and start suggesting this smokeless cigarettes. They are quite satisfied. But when few of my friends start using it, they have some problem like the nicotine which used in e-cigarette leaks when they puff it. They ask me to help them for finding a brand that doesn’t have this problem. So, finally i find a brand Jasper and Jasper who don't have this problem, and my friends are using it now, maybe there are some other better brands in the market. But that's not important, important is No more tobacco smoking.

I am a FORMER smoker. And yes, I miss it after 11 years. Two packs a day. Camels. If the E-cigarette was around when I was going through nicotine withdrawal in 1999, I wouldn't have bothered with it, either. Nicotine is a terribly addictive drug. Not like when our great-grandparents smoked and it was hip and cool and fun, but in our times, the cigarette companies have stirred in chemical additives on top of the tar and nicotine to make us even more addicted more quickly. And the physical withdrawal is no joke. It's real, it's painful, and it isn't just in your head. I did a lot of research back when I quit. Plastic cigarettes that smelled like Peppermint Patties, anti-depressant meds, lollipops - all seemed pointless to me. The way I saw it was limited to nicotine replacement. I figured my only options in 1999 were either nicotine patches or nicotine gum. I opted for the gum, only because of a contact allergy to adhesive. In 8 weeks, I had chomped my way through 450 pieces of that grimy, acidic-flavored gum, but the science behind it makes sense. If you're addicted to cigarettes and suddenly aren't smoking, the nicotine level in your body drops. Actually crashes. It's physically painful and results in 100-odd and uncomfortable symptoms that nothing really fixes, except more nicotine. If you replace that loss with 4 mgs of nicotine ingested orally, you actually are completely eliminating withdrawal. The only difference is that it's going through your digestive tract, rather than your lungs. It works, but if you're still uncomfortable with the process, you're not in fact addicted to anything. If you don't need nicotine replacement, then in theory, you can quit without any difficulty. The withdrawal process itself lasts 3-6 days. You'll feel like setting your hair on fire and smoking it for 72 hours, but after that, it's all an emotional bond to Mr. Marlboro. And when it's all over and you're reducing your patches or gum, you'll love the feeling of not being an addict. Good luck. .imz

At last, a review that isn't by one of the manufacturers! I had to Google "impartial electronic cigarette review" to get to this... and STILL all the manufacturer websites came up.

I'm having the same woes with mine (Elusion). Chiefly I'm unhappy that I"m not getting a big ol' lungful of something smokey... but then, I don't know how I'd expect anyone to craft that safely.

Here's a recent post I wrote about trying to quit: http://heymannowyourereallyliving.wordpress.com/2010/11/15/day-76-creating-a-quit-smoking-or-die-fool-plan/

Whoever said that Jasper and Jasper electronic cigarettes leak is talking absolute rubbish. I've tried several different ecigs including the brand that this fella seemed to mention (or promoting as the case may be) and think the J&J is far superior to them all.

I've had mine for just over 3 months now and not had one drop of nicotine leak into my mouth.

It is by far the best electronic cigarette I've ever used and I can safely say that I can not find a single fault with it.

It is the classiest device on the market and I would (and frequently do) recommend them to anyone looking to give up smoking.

I will never, ever smoke a cigarette again. My wife and I just love these things. I was a pack a day smoker for 30 years. I was in the process of quitting with the patch when I decided to try these. It was not so much the nicotine withdrawl that always caused me to fail when I tried to quit, it was the habit. I love to sit on my back deck in the summer and light up. I missed that with the patch. So I tried these. I use the non-nicotine strength. I love them. I've broken the nicotine habit but not the puffing habit. This is nothing more than a substitute nicotine delivery device and it is much better than smoking the real thing. Takes a little getting used to but worth it.

you got a crappy one. get one by green nicotine, those are the best. I use them not as an alternative to smoking, but to stop sugar cravings, and it really helps a lot, and I know what tobacco tastes like; Ive smoked cigars more than once and this tastes a lot like it. I don't inhale my E-cig I just puff on it a bit when I want sugar and I gotta tell you, since I started using these things I have a lot more energy.

I don't smoke, but I've been very curious about this product nonetheless. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Smoked for 35 years2 packs a day,,I loved smoking.

Tried a JoYe Ego E-Cig for kicks, quit reg cigs on first day, haven't had a tobacco cig in 5 months and no desire too.

Cough has went away completely,no more sinus headaches, insomnia went away,I feel more energetic.

I can smell extremely well now, food tastes better.

My parents smoked for 52 years and have had the EXACT same results as me.

My brother,brother-in-law and several co-workers also have had same results as I have.

Buy only euice made in America, not all E-Cig devices are equal.

For me and my family and friends we use the JoYe Ego,I avoid the ones that light up at the end as I feel those are silly, the last thing I want is to look like I am smoking.

Hi,

I find almost all the material I have read on the internet about e-cigarettes to be overwhelmingly positive, especially responses from supposed smokers. I have dabbled with a variety of such devices, and must say that almost everyone gives a metallic taste, and/or f burning plastic. All of these devices look cheaply put together (and they are, in China), without any quality control. Manufacturers have claimed they are safer but there is absolutely no regulation, and the devices are too recent for anyone to know what kind of long term health problems they will cause. How do we know it's just vapour? most of the e-juice comes in little bottles with cheap looking stickers (often riddled with spelling mistakes). If you breathe in fumes from burning plastic or anything metallic, the poisoning could be severe, and one should never use a plastic inhaler that heats up a vapour because fumes from the combination of the heating elements could cause damage, and there have been no guarantees on safety. It is right for the FDA to ban this until it is deemed safe. People use the argument that they are safer than cigarettes? Says who? The people who made them? So far, people only seem to be repeating what the manufacturers state, and vaping communities seem a little too enthusiastic. Some people enjoy this because it helps them circumvent smoking bans, others feel it is a miracle, and do not want anybody to even suggest there may be something wrong with these. I am fairly young, and loved real cigarettes. People have known for years that cigarettes are bad, and what they do, and people make an informed decision to smoke, in spite of this. The reason is that amoking itself is what gives pleasure to many. The sensation of real smoke. Vaing just doesn't provide that, even with the devices that produce a lot of vapour. The vapour usually has a nasty sweet taste, and has made me feel sick. Admittedly I have used them very rarely, but on two consecutive days of use, I had a nasty throat irritation, stomach cramps, and felt as if something was drawing energy from me. As soon as I stopped, on the third day, I felt a lot better, and then I tried it again a few days later, and the same feelings persisted. At present, the devices are crude, cheaply put together in China and refilling the cartridges is a chore. It is not hard, but it is another ritual that you would have to get used to. If somkers wanted to learn to quit, then they should actually avoid something that will give them a set of new rituals. Vaping, at present, is as much about learning how to use and maintain the devices for optimal performance. It is not something most smokers would want. Too much hassle for one thing, and an inferior experience of 'smoking'. Most smokers quit because they become a slave to the habit and the rituals, so it is not sensible trying this. NRT is effective, and has shown to be, and the products are regulated. It takes years for a product to get a licence, and there are rigorous tests conducted to ensure safety, as much as possible, and I would rather take my chances with either going cold trukey or trying NRT because I have decided to quit because I don't need cigarettes in my life anymore. I love smoking, but I would like to see my children grow up a lot more than that, and I would like to enoy life. It is short enough as it is, and while I think smoking is good fun, I enjoyed every second of it, and I may as well stop while I am still healthy. Vaping is for silly people who are such slaves to the habit, that they would rather carry stupid electric devices with vapout coming out of it, rather than just quit gracefully. Give me a cigarette anyday over these stupid devices. If you smoke to look cool, and a lot of people do, this won't make you look cool at all. I would ask people to exercise caution when investing in these devices or reading about how effective they are. Look at who the information is being produced by, and what possible interest they could have. A lot of so-called 'vapers' are really worried that any negative information would bring about an outright ban on the devices, and because THEY enjoy them, they would be happy to ridicule anyone who criticises this practice. They are very selfish people and don't give a damn about anyone's health and on the internet, people are anonymous. Maybe people reporting on blogs are just people who are selling these new products to desperate people looking to quit.

Juno,E-Cigs obviously don't work for you BUT they do work for a lot of people,I AM one of those people and so are my friends and family.

I am amazed at how many people, while some having a Collage Education, can still be stupid when trying to use one of these devices.I and many others get the same feeling from these as we did a regular cig, that is the main reason I never smoked another cig.

I still haven't had a regular cig to this day.

The device I got worked for me,was it healthier? Maybe, maybe not but it certainly couldn't have been any worse could it?Only with E-Cigs I don't have to worry about fires, smelling like an ashtray,my health has improved, certainly more positives than negatives.

Selfish? Part of the reason I tried these is so that others wouldn't have to worry about second hand smoke.

Cars produce more pollution than cigs, are you selfish since you still drive one?

I used to smoke 1.5-2 cartons a week=$60/$240 month average

I spend on a bad month $45 to vape.

Look who is opposing e-cigs,people that stand to lose the cash cow cigs cause, from the look of it you are somehow connected to one of these practices.

We are all slaves to a bad habit of some kind,it's a fact of life.

There are more positives than negatives for E-Cigs,unless of course you don't have the sence to use them.

OK... I know for a fact that e-cigs work, there are way too many options out there to give up after a crappy brand. I personally use the Ego-T but that suits a good average of people, but there are many more options out there. if you want to give up smoking, do your research into the best device for you, don't go to the websites cause obviously they're gonna say they're the best, but you should join a forum or an IRC chat and ask some people how what the best option for you would be. don't settle for crap, get informed, this stuff isn't rocket science, but it can be tedious if you don't know what you're looking for...forums and IRC people. if you're in australia try www.aussievapers.com.au or do a google search for forums.

leaks

yeah leaking nicotine into the mouth and tingling sensation is NOT GOOD!

kelly

mine doesn't give out a puff of vapors just a squirt of nicotine in my mouth (( it sucks))

J Coffey

The Ego-T is definatly a great one for first timers, you wont get the juice in your moutheven if you overfill or do it wrong and it is simple to use.

About $70 for a starter kit(you get 2 e-cigs w/batteries and a charger) and they will least a year usually.

Make sure to get at least 24mg Nicotine strength juice

I have gotten friends that smoked for 60 years to stop smoking and only useing E-Cigs,like said by other people do your research.Once you find a E-Cig that works for you regular ciggarettes will be a thing of the past.

Yes,

To anyone who has been trying to quit, or wants to cut back on regular cigarettes, or even just wants to use them as a "stand in" so to speak for work ect. eCigs are a great choice, I began working for an e-liquid manufacturer, and at the time I had no knowledge of what electronic cigarettes were at the time, and to be honest the idea just sounded silly.

I've never smoked myself, but my Mother smoked for about 40 years before she quit.

Growing up it was super frustrating watching my Mom go through a lot of the common health issues that are related to cigarettes.

But once working in the industry and now owning my own eCig company it's really humbling to hear the countless people who have been able to finally switch after battling with smoking for years, Cancer patients who were basically given a death sentence by their Doctors if they did'nt kick the habit, yet they still could'nt give it up, and later found electronic cigarettes and are now CANCER SURVIVORS!

I've gotta laugh at the people who automatically condemn ecigs, saying that Nicotine is dangerous ect. when studies have shown that it's no more dangerous than Caffeine, which yes, might not be the greatest thing in the world for you but there certainly are way much worse things out there!

To anyone out there who is thinking about trying electronic cigarettes DO IT, what have you got to loose?

A lot of the commentators here sound like salespeople who keep talking about the miraculous powers of e-cigarettes. I wonder why.

It is also quite obvious that many so-called 'vapers' belittle, disregard or trivialise the health problems anyone has reported. You claim e-cigs have helped many, but what is the source for your statistical information? More blogs where people claim that e-cigs have helped many? The marketing guff is the same kind that advertisers write to sell snake oil to the desperate.

You claim e-cigarettes are better than carcinogenic cigarettes, but how do you know if vaping wouldn't cause just as nasty health problems. Cigarettes feel harmless too as you smoke them. They don't give you acute cases of lung cancer. I mean, it#s only after years of use that these things become apparent. There are numerous brands of e-cigarettes, but none of the brands actually manufacture the products. they just purchase stuff that comes out of Chinese factories and stick on their own labels. There is hardly any information as to how these things are manufactured other than the advertisements and pro-vapers saying how healthy it is to 'vape'. It took years for people to discover what cigarettes do to your body, and it would take as long for long term effects of vaping to be known. It is totally absurd to think that because there are no associated diseases with e-cigarettes that peopel should start using them because they are bound to be better than real cigarettes. Who knows? Only time will tell. in the last several months more people have mentioned health problems on vaping forums, which I have read with great interest, but usually the pro-vapers are either dismissive or abusive, and they seem to be pushing an agenda.

Whether e-cigarettes work for me or not is hardly the point here. It is important for anyone considering using these products that you cannot trust them to be safe or healthy, no matter how much they pay Johnny Depp to endorse one in his movies. Yes, they can be fun, and can be used in lots of places, but with real cigarettes, you already know the well-publicised dangers, so you can make an informed choice. With this stuff, you never know what can happen, and people like you Coffey are actually in the majority promoting this stuff.

Be cautious when using e-cigarettes and be weary of bloggers promoting this stuff because a lot of information on the internet about e-cigarettes either comes from forums or advertising, and neither are reliable. Use these products at your peril. If you want to inhale plastic and metal by products, go ahead. This not be much safer than a real cigarette, and you look twice as stupid sucking on a plastic simulator.

It seems biased, but with good reason, it's based on unbiased facts. The site was compiled by people that are sick and tired of people hanging on the "we don't know whether they're safe" approach.

In case you're not aware, nicotine is not the dangerous thing in a cigarette.

I have now been vaping for more than 6 months now, I'm glad i'm off cigarettes.
